Jun Long is a volunteer, part of the A*STAR 30th anniversary subcommittee working with other research institutes' volunteers and A*STAR department/division members to put together a series of events and social media content to celebrate #ASTAR30 .

PART 1: Why R&D matters to Singapore?

Dr. Beh Swan Gin (Singapore Economic Development Board): For Singapore, our economic future has to be premised on us building up our capacity to create new businesses, new products, new services and more broadly become an innovation-led economy. To achieve that, R&D will be critical pillar.

Mr Lim Chuan Poh (Singapore Food Agency): Investing in research and innovation will enable Singapore to transcend all our physical limitations, our lack of natural resource. and indeed, fully leverage on our very very capable and talented people, to make ourselves relevant and useful in order for the world to want to pay attention to us.

Dr Raj Thampuran (Subrana Jurong): I think, you know, the question has to be not why R&D. But, what will be the alternative? If we are not doing R&D, if we are not undertaking knowledge based enterprises, if we don't have the talent with the right skills and expertise, we are not going to be able to shape the world of commerce and economic activity. So that's why you need R&D.

Mr Philip Yeo (Economic Development Innovations Singapore): The reason why i decided to set up NSTB in 1989 because as Chairman of EDB my concern is we cannot continue to be a high cost city state just focusing on production. We must have intellectual property. We must invest in research and development, cannot just leave it to production.

Mr Boon Swan Foo (Singapore Consortium Investment Management): Helping to create jobs, helping to meet aspirations of younger generation, that's really one of the most important areas. And I think we then knew that we cannot continue to just do manufacturing. We have to move up the ladder.

Ms Chan Lai Fung (Chairman, A*STAR): In the early years, a lot of our efforts were directed at building capability, whether in the form of bringing in talent, grooming young researchers or building the necessary infrastructure. Then there was a time when we shifted gears towards translational research. In that phase, the economic focus of A*STAR work became more pronounced. Going forward, we will be doing a lot more in term of supporting national challenges such as climate change or pandemic readiness and resilience.

Mr. Frederick Chew (Chief Executive Officer, A*STAR): I think everything we do in A*STAR, we try our best to impact the economy, impact society, to see what we can do to impact health, to lift up the science and tech capabilities in public agencies, and really to help our companies go from good to great.

Mr. Adrian Chua (Ministry of Trade and Industry): When I speak to CEOs of companies and I asked them, why are they basing their activities in Singapore? The answer often involves A*STAR and the critical role that it plays in terms of matching the company's R&D needs with researchers who can help them address their R&D challenges.

Mr. Chng Kai Fong (Smart Nation and Digital Government Group): We all believe that science, the pursuit of new products, new services, actually leads to better lives for everyone globally. I think that's the role that A*STAR has been playing and should continue to play. Every time I hear some of these research programmes that we are embarking on and the kind of potential it has, I actually always think, you know, if this succeeds, actually we can truly change the world.

Para Singapur, nuestro futuro económico debe basarse en que desarrollemos nuestra capacidad para crear nuevos negocios, nuevos productos, nuevos servicios y, en general, convertirnos en una economía impulsada por la innovación. Para lograrlo, la I+D será un pilar fundamental.

Invertir en investigación e innovación permitirá a Singapur trascender todas nuestras limitaciones físicas, nuestra falta de recursos naturales. y, de hecho, aprovechar plenamente a nuestra gente muy, muy capaz y talentosa, para hacernos relevantes y útiles para que el mundo quiera prestarnos atención.

Creo que la pregunta no debe ser por qué I+D. Pero, ¿cuál será la alternativa?
