LIM EXPLORATION LAB
Dr Jun Long LIM received the B.Eng. (2nd Upper Hons.) and Ph.D degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2010 and 2018, respectively. He also received the diploma in Electronic, Computer & Communication Engineering (ECC) from Singapore Polytechnic (SP) in 2005 before enlisted for mandatory National Service in the Republic of Singapore Air Force. As a Principal Investigator/ Senior Scientist, Dr Lim led technical expert team in AI-enabled sensor systems development, applying his knowledge to advance technologies in emerging fields of aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare. Dr Lim is a Gemini Certified Educator (2026–2029) and his current research interests are sensors, optical fiber, specialty optical fiber, Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF), Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), photonics waveguide design, harsh environment sensing, aging population, medical devices, composite materials, IoT, etc.

Abstract: We propose and demonstrate a novel and simple dual-parameter measurement scheme based on a cascaded optical fiber device of long-period grating (LPG) and photonic crystal fiber (PCF) modal interferometer. The temperature and refractive index (RI) can be measured simultaneously by monitoring the spectral characteristics of the device. The implemented sensor shows distinctive spectral sensitivities of −30.82 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) and 47.4 pm/°C by the LPG, and 171.96 nm/RIU and 10.4 pm/°C by the PCF modal interferometer. The simultaneous measurement of the temperature and external RI is experimentally demonstrated by the sensor. The temperature shift and RI shift calculated by the sensor matrix agree well with the actual temperature and RI change in the experiment.
